Traffic Lights Malfunction Causes Long Queues in Hanoi

On the night of August 16, a malfunction with traffic lights at the Lac Trung - Minh Khai intersection in Hanoi caused considerable disruption. Residents reported that the traffic signal remained continuously red, resulting in long queues of vehicles from Nguyen Khoai Road to Minh Khai.

Witnesses noted that around 8 PM, the traffic lights in this area displayed only red, leading to a backlog of vehicles traveling in both directions. Many drivers expressed concern about being caught by AI cameras for disobeying the traffic signals, causing them to hesitate and stop at the intersection. Some motorcyclists even dismounted their bikes to walk across the intersection.

In addition to the red light issue, other intersections in the city, such as Ho Tung Mau - Le Duc Tho and Hoang Cau, also experienced similar problems with traffic lights showing yellow. Authorities explained that the prolonged red and flashing yellow lights were part of a traffic signal adjustment following a football match in the ASEAN Cup 2026 held that evening.

Previously, Hanoi had faced issues with traffic signals not displaying countdown timers, or showing red or green lights for extended periods after the countdown ended. Officials clarified that these adjustments are made to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion, especially during peak hours or when there is a sudden increase in vehicle numbers.

During these adjustments, temporary technical issues may occur, such as the absence of countdown displays or multiple signals being active simultaneously. However, these issues are typically resolved after a single traffic light cycle.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with traffic signals and the instructions of traffic police to ensure safety. If unusual delays or issues with the traffic signal system persist, citizens are encouraged to report them to the Traffic Control Center or the Traffic Police Department of Hanoi at the provided contact number for timely assistance.
