Typhoon Saudel Strengthens and Changes Course Before Entering Philippines

Typhoon Saudel continues to strengthen with maximum winds of 155 km/h as it approaches the Philippines' area of responsibility (PAR). The storm is expected to change direction shortly before entering PAR on August 24, raising concerns about its potential impact on local weather conditions.

As of August 22, according to the latest weather updates from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Saudel was located approximately 2,345 km east of the northern tip of Luzon. The typhoon's winds have intensified, with gusts reaching up to 190 km/h.

PAGASA forecasts that in the next 12 hours, Saudel will continue moving northwest before shifting to a west-northwest trajectory. The storm is expected to enter the northeastern boundary of PAR by the morning or afternoon of August 24. Upon entering this area, it will be given a local name, either Obet or Pilandok, depending on which tropical system enters PAR first.

Additionally, another tropical depression is currently active east of the Visayas region, which may enter PAR before Saudel. PAGASA will determine the local name for Saudel based on the order of these systems entering the area.

Saudel is anticipated to continue moving over Philippine waters in the coming days before exiting PAR on August 25. Initially monitored as a tropical depression, it has rapidly intensified into a tropical storm, and forecasts indicate it may strengthen further.

The agency is particularly monitoring Saudel's approach to PAR as it could influence the southwest monsoon (Habagat), potentially affecting weather patterns across various regions in the Philippines. PAGASA's earlier forecasts suggest that Saudel may enhance the southwest monsoon starting early next week.

The position, intensity, and trajectory of Typhoon Saudel will continue to be closely monitored as the situation develops.
