On September 26, the Investigation Agency of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Police announced the arrest of Nguyen Nhu Y, a 23-year-old resident of Kha Son commune, for extortion under the guise of a police officer. Investigations revealed that Y had been impersonating a Mobile Police officer to intimidate and extort money from drivers.

On the night of September 24, Y equipped himself with police-like gear, including a uniform, baton, flashlight, and whistle, and traveled to Vo Tranh commune. He changed into the uniform in a secluded area and began his scheme. Around 9:40 PM, he signaled a motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet to stop. In a panic to avoid being caught, the motorcyclist swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus, resulting in severe injuries.

The injured motorcyclist was rushed to Thai Nguyen Central Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, Y fled the scene, disposing of his police impersonation items in various locations before returning to his lodging. He later turned himself in to the police in the early hours of September 25.

This tragic event has prompted local authorities to advise the public on how to respond to potential impersonators. They emphasized the importance of remaining calm and compliant when approached by individuals claiming to be police officers, especially if they exhibit threatening behavior. Citizens are encouraged to take note of identifying details, such as appearance and vehicle information, and to report any suspicious encounters to the nearest police station or call emergency services.

The Thai Nguyen Provincial Police urged residents to enhance their vigilance and actively report any signs of impersonation to help prevent such criminal activities and ensure public safety.
