A ceiling collapse occurred at a shopping center in Daegu, South Korea, on the morning of October 10, 2026, injuring 38 people, nine of whom were hospitalized. The incident took place around 10:16 AM local time on the second floor of a four-story building while a company was hosting a promotional sale for kitchen products. At the time of the collapse, there were approximately 66 people present on the second floor, including many elderly customers.
Witnesses reported hearing unusual noises coming from the ceiling just moments before the structure gave way. Panic ensued as shoppers hurried to find an exit. The Daegu Fire and Safety Department quickly dispatched 60 personnel and 14 vehicles to the scene to conduct search and rescue operations, assess safety conditions, and assist those affected.
The injuries sustained were primarily due to debris and construction materials falling onto individuals during the incident. Some victims also experienced dizziness and discomfort. Fortunately, part of the ceiling's drywall fell but remained suspended above the tables, preventing more severe injuries from occurring.
The building, constructed in 1994, features a reinforced concrete structure, and the grocery store located on the first floor had ceased operations at the end of September. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the ceiling collapse and are working to implement safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In response to the incident, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung directed relevant agencies to focus all efforts on rescue and recovery operations. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook also instructed the Ministry of Interior and Safety, along with the National Fire Agency, to assess nearby medical facilities' capacity to accommodate the injured. The Daegu city government has been urged to expedite the transfer of injured individuals to hospitals and provide psychological support to those affected while working to clarify the cause of the incident.
