Vietnam is embarking on an ambitious project to build an international transshipment port in Can Gio, with a total investment of approximately 128.872 trillion VND (around $5 billion). This mega port is expected to enhance Vietnam's logistics capabilities and strengthen its position in the global shipping industry.
On October 9, during a meeting at the government headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc welcomed Soren Toft, CEO of MSC Group, a Swiss shipping giant that operates over 1,000 vessels and holds about 22% of the global container transport market. Mr. Toft expressed his admiration for Vietnam's economic growth and long-term vision, which he believes instills confidence in investors, particularly in the port and logistics sectors that require significant capital and long-term commitment.
MSC is keen to expand its investment in Vietnam, particularly in the Can Gio project, which aims to create a large-scale container transshipment center that connects to MSC's global transport network. The port is designed to accommodate large container ships with a capacity of up to 250,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) and is expected to handle around 16.9 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually.
During the meeting, Mr. Toft emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive transport system and maritime routes to effectively utilize the port's capabilities. He also expressed interest in collaborating on rail transport, inland ports, and other maritime projects in Central Vietnam.
Vietnam's government is currently implementing plans to develop its transport and port systems with a long-term vision, focusing on enhancing the capacity to accommodate large vessels and improving connectivity between ports and economic centers. The Deputy Prime Minister encouraged MSC to continue fostering its partnership with the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and to explore investments in construction, port operations, and logistics.
The Can Gio mega port project, covering an area of approximately 571 hectares, is expected to contribute significantly to the national budget, generating around 34 to 40 trillion VND annually and creating tens of thousands of jobs in construction, port operations, and related services. With Vietnam's coastline stretching over 3,200 kilometers and ongoing investments in port infrastructure, the country is poised for substantial growth in maritime transport.
As Vietnam continues to innovate its growth model through science, technology, and digital transformation, the demand for maritime transport is expected to rise, further enhancing the country's logistics capabilities and positioning it as a key player in the global shipping industry.
