Vietnam's Public Employees to Enjoy Extended National Day Holiday

Vietnam's Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that public employees will enjoy a five-day holiday for National Day on September 2, 2026. This extended break is made possible by a work schedule adjustment where employees will work on Saturday, August 22, in exchange for taking a day off on Monday, August 31.

According to the announcement, public employees will have two days off for the National Day holiday: September 2 and the preceding day, September 1. The adjustment allows for a continuous five-day holiday when combined with the regular weekend breaks.

In the private sector, employees will also have the option to take a day off on either September 1 or September 3, alongside the National Day on September 2. The Ministry encourages employers to adopt similar holiday arrangements for their workers, promoting agreements that are beneficial for employees.

Many companies are planning to provide a longer break of about three to four days during the National Day to allow workers to rest and visit their families. Furthermore, the Labor Code stipulates that employees who work during holidays will be compensated at a rate of at least 300% of their regular wage, in addition to their holiday pay.

Night shift workers will receive an extra 30% on their wages for working during the night, and those who work overtime at night will earn an additional 20% on top of their regular pay. Following the National Day holiday, there will be another day off for Vietnam Culture Day on November 24, 2026, marking a total of 12 days of holidays and festivals for the year.

The Ministry has proposed two options for observing Vietnam Culture Day for public employees. Option one allows for a four-day holiday from November 21 to November 24, with a compensatory workday on Saturday, November 28. Option two suggests taking November 24 off without adjusting the work schedule.
