The Vietnamese Ministry of Home Affairs has put forth a proposal to extend the holiday for Culture Day in 2026, allowing for a four-day break. This initiative is part of two plans being considered, aimed at enhancing cultural engagement and facilitating various cultural activities.

According to the proposed plans, the first option suggests that the Culture Day holiday be observed on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. To accommodate this, the Ministry recommends swapping the workday on Monday, November 23, with the following Saturday, November 28. This would create a continuous holiday from Saturday, November 21, to Tuesday, November 24, with a make-up workday on Saturday, November 28. This extended break is intended to encourage civil servants and employees to participate in cultural events, thereby promoting the significance of Culture Day.

The second option also proposes the holiday on November 24 but without altering any workdays. The Ministry emphasizes that the first option would not only provide a longer holiday but also ensure compliance with labor regulations, maintaining the required work hours.

For employees in the private sector, the Ministry encourages employers to adopt similar holiday practices for their workers, ensuring that all labor rights are upheld according to legal standards. The Ministry also suggests that businesses consider making more favorable arrangements for their employees during this period.

This proposal is based on Resolution No. 28/2026/QH16, which will take effect on July 1, 2026. The Ministry aims to finalize the arrangements for the first Culture Day holiday by November 24, 2026. Looking ahead to 2027, when November 24 falls on a Wednesday, the Ministry plans to observe the holiday without any workday swaps, in accordance with the new resolution.

Previously, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor had also suggested swapping the workday to create a continuous four-day break from November 21 to November 24. Furthermore, in the draft law amending several provisions of the Labor Code, the Ministry has proposed adding Culture Day on November 24 as an official holiday, which would increase the total number of public holidays and festivals to 12 days. In addition to Culture Day, employees will also enjoy time off for New Year's Day, Lunar New Year, Victory Day, International Labor Day, National Day, and Hung Kings' Commemoration Day.
