The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued a warning about a widespread heavy rain event expected to begin on the night of August 17, affecting 13 provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh. Some areas could see rainfall exceeding 450mm, which raises concerns about potential landslides and flooding.

As of August 15, the Central Highlands and Southern regions have already experienced scattered rain and thunderstorms, with rainfall measurements in some areas surpassing 80mm. The forecast indicates that the northern provinces, including Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, will experience scattered rain and thunderstorms from the evening of August 15 through August 16, with localized heavy rain exceeding 80mm.

From August 17 to August 21, the northern region, including provinces such as Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Hanoi, is expected to receive moderate to heavy rain, with some areas potentially experiencing very heavy rainfall. The rainfall is attributed to a tropical convergence line affecting the northern delta and northern central regions.

The forecast predicts that areas like Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, and Hanoi may see rainfall totals ranging from 150 to 300mm, with isolated areas exceeding 450mm. Meanwhile, provinces like Lai Chau and Dien Bien are expected to receive between 100 to 200mm of rain.

Authorities have warned of the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, urban regions, and industrial zones, as well as the potential for flash floods in small rivers and streams. Landslides on steep slopes are also a significant concern due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.
