Search for Soldier Remains in Quang Tri Where 93 Died

The Quang Tri Military Command recently conducted a field survey to identify potential burial sites for soldiers in the Câu Nhi area, where 93 soldiers perished during a significant battle in May 1972. The team, led by Colonel Truong Nhu Y, Deputy Political Chief of the Quang Tri Military Command, aims to verify information provided by witnesses regarding the location of soldier remains.

This survey is crucial for ensuring accurate and systematic recovery operations. The team has carefully analyzed the terrain and established specific zones for further investigation, marking areas that have been searched and those that have not. They have also pinpointed new locations that may contain soldier remains based on witness testimonies and historical research.

To facilitate the recovery process, the team assessed the current state of properties, crops, and vegetation that might be affected during the excavation. They engaged with local residents and stakeholders to agree on compensation plans for any potential damages caused by the recovery efforts.

Colonel Truong emphasized the importance of collaboration among military units, local authorities, and witnesses to continue verifying information and documenting findings according to regulations. He urged the specialized unit to expedite the search in areas of interest while organizing workshops with witnesses, veterans, and historians to enhance the effectiveness of the recovery operations.

During this visit, the team also paid respects to fallen heroes at the Memorial of the 88th Regiment, 308th Division, located in Câu Nhi. Since 1992, efforts in this area have led to the recovery of 19 soldier remains, with one identified as belonging to a member of the 6th Battalion, 88th Regiment, 308th Division.
