Discovery of Seven Skeletons at Le Thi Rieng Park

On July 6, 2023, a significant archaeological discovery was made at Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, where officials uncovered seven skeletons believed to belong to fallen soldiers. This discovery was announced by Nguyen Manh Cuong, Deputy Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, during a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and other government officials.

The excavation team initially found five skeletons along with a military tarp and various valuable artifacts. Following this, two additional skeletons were uncovered, bringing the total to seven. The excavation site is located in area A, behind the memorial stone in the park, where the search for remains has been ongoing as part of a broader effort to recover the remains of soldiers.

According to reports, the excavation revealed a burial trench approximately 25 meters long and 3 meters wide. The Deputy Chairman emphasized the importance of this discovery, stating it confirms previous assessments and opens up hope for locating more remains of fallen soldiers.

Colonel Nguyen Dinh Chuan, Deputy Political Chief of the Ho Chi Minh City Command, noted that the five skeletons initially discovered have been identified as those of fallen soldiers. Work is ongoing to collect samples and establish their identities. The discovery of the additional two skeletons has further fueled hopes for the families of the fallen.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung observed the recovery team, known as Team K74, as they carefully exhumed the remains. The soldiers' remains were collected and prepared for reburial, with the Prime Minister personally participating in the transfer of the remains to a memorial house.

Among the artifacts found were personal items such as ammunition, clothing, and documents, including a decision letter that contained readable names and details about the soldiers, including one named Huynh Van Quen, who was identified as a member of Battalion 1 that operated in the Long An area.

The Prime Minister commended the efforts of the national steering committee, military forces, and local organizations involved in the search and recovery of the soldiers’ remains at Le Thi Rieng Park. He emphasized the importance of conducting the recovery efforts systematically and safely, urging close collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security to maximize resources and expedite the identification process.

"With the highest determination and commitment, I believe we will successfully complete the mission of recovering the remains of fallen soldiers at Le Thi Rieng Park," Prime Minister Le Minh Hung declared.
