Although not as overwhelming as in the photos of professional “backpackers” or cloud hunters, the view was wonderful.

In the early days of October, we were traveling on the Northwest road. The destination of this season is Ta Xua, Hang Dong (Bac Yen district, Son La province), to be “hunting clouds”. 

Departing from Hanoi, after about 5 hours with more than 200km, we arrived in Bac Yen town, one of the highland districts of Son La province, 100km east of the center of Son La city.

Continue driving for about 30 minutes, finally reaching Ta Xua commune. The scene was cloudy with clouds all over the place. Occasionally, we can see a glimpse of tiny Hmong houses on the faint mountain top. The clouds were falling, bringing a feeling of coolness that made us awake after a long journey.

We rent a small homestay, overlooking the Ta Xua valley with the desire to “hunt” the sea of ​​clouds early tomorrow. 

Appointment to wake up at 5am but the result is not as expected, no clouds come.

We continued to drive to Hang Dong commune, hoping to meet clouds on the back of dinosaurs.

At 7:00 a.m., small huts selling food and water are quite sparse. The owner of the shop said and pointed to the far side: “There, now the clouds may not be back in time. See, still quite far, on the other side of the mountain.”

The wind blew every time, the hot tea glass was exhausted, the clouds came back more and more, closer to us, the dinosaur’s spine began to be covered with clouds. Clouds are back!

The best time to hunt for clouds in Hang Dong and Ta Xua is from October to April next year.

If you ride a motorbike from Hanoi, you pass Highway 32 – Son Tay town – Trung Ha bridge – Thanh Son, Thu Cuc – Thu Cuc – Phu Yen – Bac Yen intersection.

You can sleep in the center of Ta Xua commune and get up early, drive about 30 minutes to reach the back of the Hang Dong dinosaur and the virtual rocky ledge.
