On September 19, 2026, Vinh, a city in Nghe An province, experienced an unprecedented rainfall of 399mm, breaking the long-standing record for September rainfall that had been in place since 1985. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting confirmed that this amount of rain has caused significant localized flooding across the urban area of Vinh.

The heavy rain began on the evening of September 18 and continued into the early hours of September 19. During this period, other areas in Quang Tri province also reported substantial rainfall, with Kien Giang station recording 218.8mm and Sen Thuy station measuring 209.8mm. However, the most severe impact was felt in Vinh, where the rainfall reached a staggering 399mm.

Historical data indicates that the previous record for daily rainfall in Vinh during September was 387.9mm, which occurred on September 10, 1985. For context, the highest daily rainfall ever recorded at the Vinh meteorological station was 710mm on October 16, 2019, with 470mm falling within just six hours on that day.

The meteorological agency attributed the heavy rainfall to a combination of weak low-level Northeast winds and disturbances from the tropical convergence zone, which caused wind convergence in the region. As a result, the heavy rain has shifted towards the Nghe An and Ha Tinh areas.

Forecasts suggest that the region will continue to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms through the night and into the morning of September 20. Rainfall is expected to range from 40 to 80mm, with localized areas potentially receiving over 200mm. Additionally, warnings have been issued for the risk of flash floods and landslides in several communes and wards across Nghe An and surrounding provinces.
