Hanoi is currently grappling with severe flooding following a prolonged downpour that began on the night of September 14 and continued into the morning of September 15. The heavy rainfall has led to significant water accumulation on numerous streets, causing traffic congestion during peak hours.

According to the Hanoi Drainage Company, by 6 AM on September 15, many roads in the city were reported to be inundated. Areas such as Dam Quang Trung, Co Linh, and Vinh Hung experienced severe flooding, while sections of National Highway 6 near Yen Nghia also reported significant water accumulation. The Thang Long Avenue saw rising water levels in several underpasses, particularly at underpass number 4 near An Khanh Bridge.

Rainfall measurements from 10 PM on September 14 to 6 AM on September 15 indicated that many areas in Hanoi received substantial amounts of rain. The highest recorded rainfall was in Yen So, reaching 270mm, with other areas like Hai Ba Trung and Triều Khúc also experiencing over 150mm of rain. This sudden and intense rainfall has overwhelmed the drainage systems in various neighborhoods, leading to extensive flooding.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that heavy rain is expected to continue across northern provinces and the northern central region from September 15 to 16. The southern parts of Phu Tho, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, and Thanh Hoa are predicted to receive the heaviest rainfall, with totals ranging from 150-250mm, and isolated areas potentially exceeding 350mm. In addition, regions including southern Lao Cai, Son La, northern Phu Tho, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, and Nghe An are forecasted to experience heavy to very heavy rain, with expected rainfall between 80-150mm, and isolated areas possibly exceeding 250mm.

Authorities have cautioned that this rain event could result in localized heavy downpours exceeding 100mm within a three-hour period, leading to flooding in low-lying areas, urban zones, and industrial parks. Mountainous regions are also at risk for flash floods and landslides due to the anticipated rainfall.

Forecasts indicate that from the night of September 16, rainfall in northern provinces, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An is expected to gradually decrease.
