A torrential rainstorm in Hanoi during the late afternoon of July 31 resulted in severe flooding in several areas of Long Bien district. Traffic was heavily disrupted as numerous vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, stalled due to the deep water.

Reports from local residents indicated that major roads, particularly those from the foot of Vinh Tuy Bridge through the overpass near Aeon Mall Long Bien to the Thach Ban intersection, experienced significant flooding. The rising water levels rendered many low-ground vehicles inoperable, forcing them to stop in the middle of the road.

Nguyen Ngan Tuyen, a resident of Long Bien, shared her experience of encountering multiple flooded spots on her way home. "My car has a high chassis, but I still had to drive very slowly to navigate through the flooded areas," she said. Tuyen noted that upon reaching Ngoc Tri street, the water remained deep, preventing her from parking her car at home. "I had to leave my car at the end of the street and walk home. By around 6:30 PM, the water had not receded, so I couldn't retrieve my vehicle," she added.

Many other residents in the Ngoc Tri area echoed similar concerns about the prolonged flooding following the heavy rain. Some attributed the flooding to ongoing construction projects in the area, including underpass works and related traffic infrastructure, which might be affecting drainage capabilities.

In a statement to VietNamNet, a representative from Hanoi's Department of Construction reported that Long Bien recorded an exceptionally high rainfall, peaking at over 115 mm per hour, which exceeded the immediate drainage system's capacity. This led to localized flooding on several roads. However, the official noted that after the rain subsided, the water receded relatively quickly, and by around 7 PM, most flooded areas had cleared, allowing traffic to resume.

Residents are now left wondering about the potential impact of continued heavy rains in the northern region.
