Hanoi and eight northern provinces are set to experience another round of intense rain overnight into September 18, with conditions expected to improve later in the day. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that heavy downpours will affect areas including Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, and Phu Tho, as well as southern parts of Lao Cai, Son La, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen provinces.

Forecasters predict rainfall totals between 40-80mm, with some locations possibly exceeding 150mm. The heaviest rain is anticipated from the night of September 17 through the morning of September 18, gradually easing by the afternoon. In addition to the heavy rain, scattered thunderstorms are expected across other parts of northern Vietnam.

As conditions improve in the north, heavy rain is forecast to persist and spread southward into central Vietnam. Thanh Hoa and Nghe An are predicted to experience the most significant rainfall, with totals ranging from 50-100mm and some areas seeing over 180mm. Rainfall in Thanh Hoa is expected to decrease after September 18, while wet conditions will continue in Nghe An.

From September 18 to 19, areas from Nghe An to Hue are likely to receive 30-60mm of rain, with localized totals exceeding 100mm. Following this period, rainfall from Ha Tinh to Hue is expected to diminish, with totals of 20-40mm and more than 80mm in certain locations.

Weather authorities have issued warnings about localized intense downpours that could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, cities, and industrial zones. Residents in affected regions are advised to remain vigilant for flash floods along small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on steep slopes.

In southern Vietnam, an intertropical convergence zone combined with a low-pressure system will bring an increase in thunderstorms from September 18 to 24. Thunderstorms are expected to develop earlier in the day, particularly from midday through the evening, with moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas.

As of September 17, rain and flooding have already resulted in three fatalities due to a landslide in Da Bac commune, Phu Tho Province. Additionally, over 16,310 homes have been flooded, and more than 22,499 hectares of rice fields and other crops have been inundated or damaged. Numerous irrigation facilities, schools, and roads have also been impacted, leading to transport disruptions.
