Hanoi is bracing for significant rainfall as forecasts predict heavy downpours starting from August 20. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has indicated that many regions in Northern Vietnam and the North Central Coast will continue to experience substantial rain, with some areas possibly exceeding 200mm.
From August 20 to 21, regions from Thanh Hoa to the northern part of Quang Tri will see rainfall ranging from 50 to 110mm, with localized areas receiving more than 200mm. The low-lying areas of the Northern Delta and southern Phu Tho are expected to experience moderate to heavy rain, with totals generally between 20 to 50mm, and some areas may exceed 120mm.
During the night of August 20 and into August 21, the heaviest rain is likely to concentrate along the northern coastal areas, where rainfall totals are expected to be between 30 to 60mm, with isolated areas receiving over 120mm. The meteorological agency has issued warnings about the potential for intense rainfall, which could exceed 100mm within just three hours.
Residents are advised to be cautious of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds during this period. The heavy rain poses risks of flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides in sloped areas, and flooding in low-lying urban and industrial areas.
Forecasts suggest that the heavy rainfall will gradually decrease starting from the night of August 21. The weather outlook for August 20 across various regions in the country includes:
