Heavy Rain Forecast for 15 Northern Provinces Starting Tonight

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued a warning that starting tonight, heavy rain will increase significantly across 15 northern provinces of Vietnam, continuing until August 21. This forecast comes as the region has already experienced scattered rain over the past few days.

From 7 PM on August 16 to 3 AM on August 17, rainfall levels in several areas were notably high, with Nậm Khao in Lai Châu recording 156 mm, Trúc Tay in Bắc Ninh at 85 mm, and Dân Hòa 2 in Phú Thọ at 55 mm. The forecast indicates that from tonight through tomorrow morning, the northern region and areas from Thanh Hóa to Hà Tĩnh will see moderate to heavy rain, with expected rainfall between 50 and 120 mm, and localized areas potentially receiving over 200 mm.

The forecast for Hanoi today predicts temperatures ranging from 25 to 27 degrees Celsius at night, rising to 35 to 37 degrees Celsius during the day. The weather will be partly cloudy with hot sunshine, and there will be chances of moderate to heavy rain in the evening.

As the heavy rain begins tonight, the northern provinces, including Việt Bắc (Lào Cai, Tuyên Quang, Phú Thọ) and Tây Bắc (Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Sơn La), are expected to experience a significant increase in rainfall, with totals ranging from 30 to 60 mm, and some areas exceeding 100 mm. In the Đông Bắc region (Lạng Sơn, Bắc Ninh, Quảng Ninh, Cao Bằng, Thái Nguyên), rainfall will also range from 20 to 40 mm, with some areas exceeding 80 mm.

From August 19 to 21, the northern region and provinces from Thanh Hóa to Bắc Quảng Trị will continue to receive moderate to heavy rain, with totals between 100 and 180 mm, and some areas potentially exceeding 250 mm. Specifically, provinces like Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Bắc Tuyên Quang, Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, and Bắc Quảng Trị may see rainfall levels between 50 and 80 mm, with some areas exceeding 200 mm.

The total rainfall expected during this period (from tonight until the end of August 21) is projected to be between 150 and 300 mm, and in some areas, it could exceed 450 mm. This heavy rainfall poses a risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas, urban regions, and industrial zones, as well as the potential for flash floods in smaller rivers and landslides on steep slopes.
