New Military Service Law Addresses Evasion Tactics

On September 10, Lieutenant General Le Van Huong announced significant amendments to the military service laws in Vietnam, aimed at addressing evasion of military obligations. The revised law, which was passed by the National Assembly, highlights various actions that are now strictly prohibited, particularly those involving dishonesty in military health examinations.

During a press conference held by the Office of the President, Lieutenant General Huong, who serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, emphasized that the law is a necessary response to the ongoing reorganization of state machinery and aims to implement key directives from the Communist Party regarding national defense.

The amendments focus on several military laws, including the Law on National Defense, the Law on Military Officers, the Law on Professional Soldiers, and the Law on Military Service Obligations. The revisions are designed to streamline military organization and enhance the effectiveness of military operations.

Among the critical changes, the law specifies five behaviors that constitute evasion of military service obligations. These include failing to comply with decisions regarding military registration, health screening, enlistment, and training exercises. The new regulations also impose strict penalties for fraudulent activities during military registration and health assessments.

Furthermore, the law ensures that citizens who are engaged in military registration and health checks will receive their full salaries and allowances during this period. They will also be provided with necessary accommodations and transport costs related to their military service obligations.

This law will come into effect on September 1, 2026, marking a significant step in Vietnam's efforts to reinforce military service compliance and streamline its military framework in accordance with modern demands.
