A tragic incident occurred during a bungee jumping experience in Italy, claiming the lives of an engaged couple, Alberto Galletti and Tiziana Accora. The couple, who were looking to enjoy a thrilling adventure together, fell to their deaths after their safety harness failed during the jump.

The accident took place on May 1, 2002, at the Ponte Canale bridge near Terni, approximately 60 miles north of Rome. The couple had contacted the bungee jumping center's manager, Lorenzo Illuminati, pleading for him to keep the facility open a little longer so they could make their jump. Illuminati agreed, and the couple jumped together, embracing each other as they leaped from the bridge.

Unfortunately, the safety clips that secured their bungee cords to the bridge malfunctioned, resulting in their free fall of over 100 meters into the gorge below. Illuminati later recounted the events, stating, "I was actually closing when they called. They begged me to open, so I waited for them. They jumped together in each other's arms, and then this happened. It was horrific." He also noted that just an hour before, another couple had successfully completed a jump using the same equipment.
