General Nguyen Van Phiet: The Commander Behind the B52 Shootdown

General Nguyen Van Phiet, a celebrated figure in the Vietnam War, is best known for commanding the unit that achieved the extraordinary feat of shooting down two American B52 bombers in a mere ten minutes. This event took place in the early hours of December 21, 1972, during a critical phase of the war known as Operation Linebacker II.

Born in 1938 in Hung Yen province, General Phiet joined the revolution at the young age of 14, initially serving as a liaison for local troops during the resistance against French colonial forces. He officially enlisted in the army in 1960, eventually becoming a key figure in the Air Defense Forces.

The operation that led to the downing of the B52s was part of a larger American military campaign aimed at crippling North Vietnam’s capabilities. The U.S. deployed a significant number of B52 bombers, which were touted as “flying fortresses” due to their heavy bomb load and advanced electronic countermeasures. These bombers posed a substantial threat, making the successful defense against them a daunting challenge.

On December 16, 1972, General Phiet's unit was ordered to prepare for potential B52 strikes in Hanoi. Recognizing the urgency, they conducted extensive training and strategized on how to effectively engage the bombers. The morning of December 21 saw the culmination of their efforts when the alarm was raised at 5 AM, signaling an incoming B52 formation.

In a display of exceptional coordination and determination, General Phiet led his troops to launch three missiles, resulting in the downing of two B52s, one of which crashed on the spot. This remarkable achievement not only showcased the skill and bravery of the Vietnamese forces but also marked a significant moment in the air defense of Hanoi.

During the broader context of Operation Linebacker II, which lasted from December 18 to December 30, 1972, the U.S. dropped over 36,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnam. Despite the overwhelming firepower, the North Vietnamese forces, under the leadership of commanders like General Phiet, demonstrated remarkable resilience and tactical ingenuity. The air defense units conducted 192 engagements, successfully shooting down 36 aircraft, including 29 B52s.

General Nguyen Van Phiet's contributions earned him the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 1973, recognizing his pivotal role in the defense of Vietnam. After retiring in 2001, he continued to serve his community through charitable work, particularly focusing on helping disabled children and war victims.
