The Traffic Police Department of Vietnam has announced a proposal to trial a left lane exclusively for overtaking on two major highways: the Hanoi-Hai Phong and the Cau Gie-Cao Bo highways. This trial is set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

The primary goal of this initiative is to address the issue of traffic congestion and improve safety on these busy routes. By designating the left lane specifically for overtaking, the Traffic Police hope to discourage drivers from lingering in that lane, which often leads to slower traffic flow and increased risk of accidents.

Once a driver has successfully overtaken another vehicle, they will be required to return to the right lane. This rule is intended to promote a more efficient use of highway space and ensure that the left lane remains clear for overtaking maneuvers.

The implementation of this trial is part of a broader strategy to enhance traffic management and safety across Vietnam’s road networks. Authorities believe that by optimizing lane usage, they can significantly reduce the likelihood of traffic jams and improve overall driving conditions.
