Meteorological authorities in Vietnam have issued a warning regarding the risk of flash floods and landslides in the provinces of Son La and Lao Cai due to heavy rainfall. The warning comes as the region has already experienced significant rainfall, with some areas reporting over 50mm of rain in just a couple of hours.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from 6 AM to 8 AM on August 11, 2026, rainfall measurements included 46.4mm in Quang Minh and 45.4mm in Huy Tuong (Son La), while Tân Thịnh recorded 53.8mm and Chấn Thịnh 39.6mm (Lao Cai). The soil moisture models indicate that some areas are nearing saturation, which could exacerbate the risk of flooding.

The forecast for the next six hours predicts continued rainfall, with accumulated precipitation expected to range from 20 to 50mm, and in some places, exceeding 90mm. This poses a significant risk of flash floods in small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on steep slopes in various localities.

The authorities have classified the risk level for natural disasters due to flash floods and landslides as level 1, indicating a low but present threat. However, such events can severely impact the environment, disrupt local transportation, and damage infrastructure, affecting both social and economic activities.

In light of these conditions, local authorities are urged to review and monitor vulnerable areas to implement preventive measures and respond effectively to potential emergencies. Residents are advised to stay informed and take precautions during this period of adverse weather.
