Government Reviews National High School Graduation Exam Results After Anomaly in Tuyen Quang

In light of an unexpected occurrence involving unusually high scores in mathematics at the Tuyen Quang high school graduation exam, the Vietnamese government has instructed the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Ministry of Public Security to conduct a comprehensive review of the 2026 national high school graduation exam results.

This directive was issued by Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau during a meeting on July 7 regarding the organization of the 2026 graduation exam in Tuyen Quang province. The government acknowledged the swift and serious response from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Tuyen Quang provincial government in addressing the situation surrounding the high mathematics scores at Tuyen Quang Specialized High School.

Deputy Prime Minister Chau described the incident as serious, with significant implications for the education sector and society as a whole. However, the Ministry of Education and Training reported that this incident is an isolated case and does not reflect the overall results of the exam or the efforts of the education sector and students nationwide.

He emphasized the need for a thorough and objective investigation into the nature of the irregularities in Tuyen Quang and the strict punishment of any individuals or organizations found at fault. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of maintaining fairness and the integrity of the examination process, ensuring that capable students do not lose their opportunities for further education.

Tuyen Quang province is responsible for the safety of the exam and must promptly review the entire process of organizing the exam, clarifying the responsibilities of individuals and organizations involved in its administration. The local authorities have been instructed to develop appropriate measures to rectify the situation and to propose specific solutions to the Ministry of Education and Training to safeguard the rights of the affected students by July 9.

The Ministry of Public Security has been tasked with leading the investigation, working alongside the Ministry of Education and the Tuyen Quang provincial government to clarify any violations and identify those responsible for the irregularities.

Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister called for the prompt public announcement of the investigation results to facilitate timely corrective actions. He also directed the Ministry of Education and Training to continue the nationwide review of the 2026 high school graduation exam results, ensuring that any anomalies are addressed in coordination with relevant authorities.

On July 1, when the Ministry of Education and Training announced the exam results, Tuyen Quang Specialized High School garnered attention for having 290 out of 328 students, all with registration numbers ranging from 080163xx to 080166xx, scoring 9 or higher in mathematics, with over 140 students achieving a perfect score of 10. The average score of this group was 9.58, the highest in the country.

In response to the unusual scores, on July 5, the Tuyen Quang Provincial Police initiated an emergency detainment of Nguyen Ha Duy, a teacher at Tuyen Quang Specialized High School, as part of the investigation into the graduation exam results.
