Uber has been ordered to pay $40 million to the family of a 23-year-old woman who tragically lost her life after being left on a California highway by her rideshare driver. Emily Normandin-Parker had booked an Uber ride home on August 12, 2023, when her friend became ill during the trip. According to court documents, the driver pulled over and forced the intoxicated women out of the vehicle, leading to Normandin-Parker being struck and killed by another car.

Her parents expressed their devastation, stating, "Emily did everything Uber tells riders to do - she made the responsible choice not to drive and we trusted Uber to get her home safely. That trust cost our daughter her life." The judge in the case, Richard Stone, ruled in favor of the family after a five-day arbitration process, stating that the driver, Vu Tran, showed more concern for his car than for the safety of his passengers.

Despite Uber's argument that the driver was an independent contractor and that the company should not be held responsible for his actions, the arbitration concluded that the company had a duty to ensure the safety of its riders. The law firm representing Normandin-Parker's family revealed that after abandoning the women on the highway, Tran did not seek help but instead called Uber to demand a cleaning fee from Normandin-Parker.

Uber has stated that it believes the arbitrator's ruling was incorrect and emphasized its commitment to improving safety through new technologies and policies. The company also mentioned that it had proposed a $10 million settlement to the family, which they declined, preferring to seek justice through arbitration.
