A tropical depression, identified as LPA 09d, is developing rapidly and is expected to intensify into a Category 1 typhoon within the next few days. According to the latest report from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the depression is currently located approximately 2,970 kilometers southeast of Luzon Island.

As of September 16, 2026, at 8 AM local time, the depression is situated at around 15.0 degrees North latitude and 148.6 degrees East longitude, with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near its center, gusting up to 70 km/h. It is moving slowly in a west-northwest direction.

Forecast models indicate that the tropical depression will continue to strengthen as it moves northwest, eventually turning northward towards Japan. Projections suggest that wind speeds could increase to approximately 72 km/h by September 17, reaching 91 km/h by September 18, and potentially hitting 107 km/h between September 19 and 20. By September 21, wind speeds may escalate to around 126 km/h, with atmospheric pressure at the center dropping to about 970 hPa, classifying it as a Category 1 typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

PAGASA also reported that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is affecting the region, leading to cloudy conditions and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms across various areas, including Negros Island, Central and Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Masbate, Lanao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Other regions of Visayas and Mindanao are expected to experience similar weather due to the ITCZ, while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may see localized rain showers or thunderstorms.
