Pork Prices Unexpectedly Drop Ahead of Holiday Season

Pork prices in Vietnam have seen an unexpected decline as of August 27, 2026, after a week of steady increases. This drop is particularly notable in various northern provinces, where prices have decreased by 1,000 VND, bringing the cost down to 59,000 VND per kilogram in regions such as Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Lao Cai, and Lai Chau.

In major cities like Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh, Hung Yen, and Phu Tho, prices remain the highest in the region at 60,000 VND per kilogram. Other provinces are also maintaining prices at 59,000 VND per kilogram.

In the Central region, pork prices have similarly dropped by 1,000 VND in Quang Tri and Hue, now priced at 57,000 VND per kilogram. The highest price in this region is recorded at 58,000 VND in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Lam Dong, while other provinces are holding steady at 57,000 VND per kilogram.

The Southern market also reflects a 1,000 VND decrease, with prices in Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, and Tay Ninh now at 57,000 VND per kilogram. Vinh Long stands out as the only locality maintaining the highest price in the region at 58,000 VND per kilogram, while other areas are at 57,000 VND.

Some livestock businesses in Dong Nai have noted that pork prices typically rise about a month before and after long holiday periods. The recent price increase was in line with this trend. However, recent reports regarding unsafe food products and lack of traceability have negatively impacted the market, leading to stagnant consumer demand. With supply and demand stabilizing, pork prices have quickly cooled down.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the price of pork at wholesale markets ranges from 70,000 to 74,000 VND per kilogram. Common pork cuts are priced as follows: shoulder meat at 160,000 VND per kilogram, belly at 183,000 VND, boneless shank at 168,000 VND, hind leg at 150,000 VND, and neck meat at 185,000 VND.
