Nguyen Quang Thieu Dismissed as President of Vietnam Writers' Association

On August 24, the executive committee of the Vietnam Writers' Association announced the dismissal of Nguyen Quang Thieu from his role as President. The decision came during a meeting convened by the association to review and discuss disciplinary actions against Thieu.

The meeting included members of the executive committee and representatives from various governmental and cultural organizations. The discussion focused on the responsibilities and oversight of the association, particularly in relation to its publishing activities.

Prior to this dismissal, on July 30, the Central Inspection Commission had stripped Thieu of all party positions, citing a lack of leadership and oversight within the organization. The commission noted that the association had failed to fulfill its responsibilities regarding the management of its publishing house, leading to violations of both party regulations and state laws.

Thieu, born in 1957 in Hanoi, has had a distinguished career in literature, having published numerous poetry and prose collections, as well as translations. He served as the director of the Vietnam Writers' Association Publishing House from 2017 to 2020 and was elected president of the association in November 2020. His notable works include the novel 'The Assassin of the Rice Field,' which was adapted into a popular television series.

Following Thieu's dismissal, Nguyen Binh Phuong, the vice president of the association, will take over the operational duties until a new president is appointed.
