China Sinks 34 Concrete Buildings into Sea for Coastal Defense

In a remarkable engineering feat, China has commenced the sinking of 34 enormous concrete blocks into the sea, each weighing about 3,500 tons. This project, located off the coast of Qingdao, aims to construct a 675-meter-long seawall designed to protect the coastal area from the harsh effects of waves and environmental conditions.

The first concrete block was successfully lowered into the designated area in early August 2026. Each block, measuring approximately 16.07 meters by 24.19 meters and standing between 12 to 15 meters tall, is comparable in height to a five-story building. The construction of these precast concrete components took place onshore before their transportation to the installation site.

The transportation process involved moving each 3,500-ton block from the production area to a barge, which then towed it to the installation site. Although the distance traveled was only about 1 kilometer, the journey took nearly an hour due to the sheer weight of the blocks and the need for careful maneuvering. The blocks were positioned with remarkable precision, utilizing GPS technology and a smart monitoring system developed by engineers to ensure accurate placement.

Each submerged block is equipped with 12 anchoring points and four water valves, facilitating their descent to the seabed. The accurate positioning of these blocks is crucial, as they will be arranged sequentially to form a gravity-based seawall system. The weight of the concrete structures will help maintain the stability of the seawall against wave action and marine environmental factors.

Before being submerged, the massive concrete components were fabricated at a precast yard spanning approximately 40,000 square meters. The project has been meticulously planned, with construction phases including concrete pouring and curing, ensuring that each block meets the necessary strength requirements for long-term underwater durability.

To transport each 3,500-ton block from shore to sea, large air bags were used to lift and move the structures onto the barge. The timing of these operations is carefully calculated based on tidal conditions to ensure safety and stability during transport. The project aims to deploy one block every two days, with a target of approximately 12 units per month, though actual progress will depend on sea conditions.

The challenges of this project extend beyond the sheer weight of the components; the dynamic marine environment, including winds, waves, and tides, significantly impacts the transportation and installation processes. Each transport operation requires thorough weather monitoring and equipment checks to ensure safety and efficiency.

Once completed, the 34 concrete blocks will form a significant part of the coastal defense infrastructure for the new integrated marine energy development complex in Qingdao, which is set to support offshore wind, solar energy, and hydrogen activities. This project marks a significant advancement in China's efforts to enhance its coastal resilience and infrastructure.
