China Breaks Construction Records with 1.4 Million Ton Concrete Block

A major construction project in Los Angeles has recently seen the mobilization of over 2,100 concrete trucks in a continuous 20-hour operation to lay the foundation for a new skyscraper. This event echoes a similar large-scale concrete pouring that took place in 2014, which was crucial for the New Wilshire Grand project.
The current project has an estimated investment of over $1 billion and aims to construct a tower approximately 335 meters tall. The building will feature office spaces, conference areas, retail zones, underground parking, and a hotel with around 900 rooms. The previous concrete pouring event in February 2014 was one of the largest in the world, where thousands of trucks transported tens of thousands of tons of concrete to create the foundation of the New Wilshire Grand.
During the 2014 event, more than 38,000 tons of concrete were poured into a single foundation block. The construction site, which was previously the location of the 16-story Wilshire Grand Hotel, had been a bustling construction zone for over a year prior to this significant pour. Engineers spent about five months preparing the site, excavating a foundation pit approximately 5.5 meters deep, covering an area nearly equivalent to two-thirds of an American football field.
What set this project apart was the method of pouring the foundation. Instead of pouring concrete in multiple stages and linking the blocks with steel reinforcements, engineers opted for a continuous pour to enhance the structural integrity of the tower. This decision necessitated the near-constant operation of thousands of trucks.
Concrete must be used within 90 minutes of mixing, presenting a logistical challenge to ensure that each truck arrived at the site on time. Eight concrete mixing stations, along with a backup, were strategically placed within a 32-kilometer radius of downtown Los Angeles to maintain a steady supply. Upon arrival, the concrete was pumped through 19 machines and into 13 pipes leading to the foundation pit.
The challenges did not end with the last truck leaving the site. Once poured, the concrete began to harden and generate heat. To manage the temperature within the large foundation block, nearly 30.5 kilometers of polyethylene pipes were installed, circulating cold water to prevent overheating. Twenty-four sensors monitored the temperature hourly, aiming to keep it between 49-71 degrees Celsius under normal weather conditions.
The 2014 concrete pour marked a pivotal moment for the project, which officially opened in 2017 as the Wilshire Grand Center. Today, it stands as a prominent feature of the Los Angeles skyline, housing the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel and contributing to the city's architectural landscape.
