The arm statue on Hai Tien beach in Viet Nam is controversial

Thanh Hoa - 5 concrete arm statues built on Hai Tien beach are being considered as lacking aesthetics.

Along the beach nearly a kilometer from the sea square of Hoang Tien commune to Hoang Thanh boat station - Hoang Hoa district, there are 5 half arms raised statues with fingers spread wide, made of reinforced concrete, with red bricks and cement.

Each arm is more than 4m high, the largest elbow’s diameter is about a meter. The round base’s perimeter is about 6m and also cast in concrete.

On April 7, the construction team said that the statue would take about more than a month to be made. After the plastering work, it will be painted white as it was designed.

Witnessing a series of statues appearing on the coast of Hai Tien, many people and tourists think that the statue is disrupting the natural landscape and blocking the coastal space which has already been narrowed due to tidal intrusion in recent years. These concrete objects can be dangerous for the tourists.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu - Manager of the Investment and Construction Project Management Board of Hoằng Hóa district, said that this is a watchtower made to observe tourists swimming in the sea. The project also creates a new landscape for visitors to take pictures. Each statue is worth 60 million VND, funded from the budget.

According to the design, Mr. Tu said he had referred to the watchtower model in many tourism areas and decided to choose the handshape. "The new structure has just finished the rough part, so it looks a bit ugly. After the plastering work, we also created the biceps, back of the hand and fingers, then the statue would be beautiful at the end." said Mr. Tu.

Responding to the opinion that the statue lacks aesthetics, Mr.Tu said that the architecture-related works often have comments of praise and criticism, because “beauty in people's eyes are different". The project is invested by the People's Committee of Hoằng Hóa district, the decision-making authority is under district’s jurisdiction, so it is not necessary to be allowed by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
