China has recently achieved a remarkable feat in the construction sector by successfully creating a concrete block weighing 1.4 million tons. This massive structure is a vital element for the Shiziyang Bridge, which is currently under construction over the Zhujiang River. The completion of the main anchor blocks on both the eastern and western sides of the bridge represents a significant step forward in the project.
The western anchor block, with a diameter of 130 meters and a depth equivalent to a ten-story building, weighs approximately 1.4 million tons. This anchor block is critical as it will bear the tension from the main cable system of the bridge. Engineers have also established an on-site testing system to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of the deep rock foundation, refining their calculations for strength and displacement.
Once completed in 2029, the Shiziyang Bridge is expected to set five world records for cable-stayed bridges, including the longest main span and the tallest main towers. The entire project will stretch approximately 35 kilometers, featuring a main span of 2,180 meters and a main tower height of 342 meters. The bridge will also include a main cable with a diameter of 1.5 meters and accommodate 16 lanes of traffic across two levels.
This bridge is poised to be the first two-tiered steel cable-stayed bridge in the world with a main span exceeding 2,000 meters. Additionally, it will serve as the first two-tiered roadway bridge over the Zhujiang River. Upon its operation, travel time across the bridge is expected to be reduced from approximately one hour to just 30 minutes.
The Shiziyang Bridge is anticipated to enhance connectivity within the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, forming an essential link in the regional transportation network. Alongside other infrastructure projects, it aims to create a 'one-hour urban traffic circle', bolstering trade, tourism, and economic development in the region.
