Tam Anh Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has set a new record by successfully conducting more than 100 complex joint replacement surgeries using the next-generation AI robot CUVIS-Joint in just over three months. This achievement is recognized as one of the leading performances worldwide, according to the robot's manufacturer, CUREXO.
The 100th patient, 70-year-old Mr. Hào, underwent knee replacement surgery with the CUVIS-Joint robot after suffering from severe knee osteoarthritis, which left him in pain and unable to walk normally. Dr. Lê Văn Tuấn, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Center at Tam Anh Hospital, noted that Mr. Hào's case was particularly complex, making traditional techniques or older robotic systems less effective and safe.
The CUVIS-Joint robot employs AI software that assists surgeons in pre-surgical planning, bone cutting precision, and accurate joint placement down to the millimeter. Remarkably, Mr. Hào experienced significant pain reduction the day after surgery and began physical therapy, allowing for a swift recovery. He was discharged just three days post-operation, walking comfortably.
According to Cho Young Jean, International Commercial Director of CUREXO, the speed at which Tam Anh Hospital achieved over 100 surgeries and its 100% success rate place it among the best in the world, surpassing initial results from major hospitals in Europe, South Korea, and India. Typically, it takes many international medical facilities 6 to 12 months to reach 100 robotic surgeries due to patient selection and training requirements.
In addition to the impressive surgical outcomes, Tam Anh Hospital has recently received three international certifications for robotic knee replacement surgery, reflecting the trust patients place in the hospital and its advanced technological infrastructure and high expertise.
Dr. Lê Đình Khoa, Head of the Joint Reconstruction Department, explained that many patients undergoing these surgeries faced severe risks of disability due to conditions like joint deformities, bone necrosis, and significant soft tissue damage. The CUVIS-Joint robot enables surgeons to visualize critical parameters such as bone cutting angles and optimal joint placement, allowing for personalized surgical plans rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
With over 100 surgeries completed, the surgical team at Tam Anh Hospital has gained extensive practical experience, ensuring high accuracy and safety standards while continually reducing surgery times. Currently, the average duration for a robotic knee replacement surgery is approximately 60 to 90 minutes, with patients experiencing less blood loss and effective pain management.
The cost for a complete robotic knee replacement surgery at Tam Anh Hospital starts at approximately 135 million VND, which includes all diagnostic expenses, surgery, post-operative care, and specialized nutrition, making it significantly more affordable compared to similar procedures in other countries.
Vietnam is now the ninth country to possess the CUVIS-Joint robotic surgical system, which is only available in a few dozen major hospitals worldwide. In the United States, the robot has been approved by the FDA and has been successfully used in thousands of surgeries over the years.
