The Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, and Climate Change has released a forecast regarding the number of tropical storms and depressions expected to affect Vietnam from August to October 2026. The forecast predicts that there will be approximately 4 to 5 tropical storms and depressions in the East Sea, which is less than the average of 6 storms during this period in previous years.
Dr. Truong Ba Kien, Deputy Director of the Center for Meteorological and Climate Research, highlighted that although the El Nino phenomenon typically results in fewer storms, it does not eliminate the risk of severe weather events. Currently, atmospheric and oceanic conditions are under the influence of a strong El Nino, which is expected to persist into early spring 2027.
According to Dr. Kien, the intensity of the El Nino phenomenon is likely to increase, reaching strong to very strong levels from August to October 2026, with a probability of about 90%. This could lead to severe drought conditions in the Central Highlands and Southern regions of Vietnam during the dry season of 2026-2027.
In terms of temperature trends, the forecast indicates that from August to October 2026, temperatures are expected to be higher than the historical average across most regions of the country. Notably, the northern and central regions may experience intense heat during August and September.
Despite the forecast of fewer storms, the potential for strong storms with complex trajectories remains a concern. Dr. Kien emphasized the importance of continuous updates and integration of meteorological information to adjust production plans and response strategies accordingly.
In conclusion, while the number of tropical storms may be lower than usual, the potential for severe weather impacts necessitates vigilance and preparedness among the communities at risk.
