Europe is currently experiencing one of the most severe droughts in recent years, with significant implications for its waterways. According to Pawel Staniszewski, a hydrologist from the Warsaw Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, Poland is facing critical drought conditions, particularly in the southern regions. He noted that there are currently 71 drought warnings across the country, with water flow levels at 320 hydrological stations recorded as alarmingly low.

The situation is compounded by extreme heat, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius in southern Poland. This has resulted in a drop in water levels across many rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, and Vistula, exposing previously submerged landscapes and artifacts.

In Germany, low water levels on the Rhine have revealed sunken fishing boats and other historical sites. Meanwhile, in Croatia, record low water levels have uncovered a sunken ship, stranding several vessels along the riverbanks. The phenomenon of 'hunger stones' has also emerged, particularly in areas like Worms, where stones marked with historical drought levels serve as warnings for future generations about the risks of famine due to drought.
