Two More Arrested in Tuyen Quang Exam Scandal

In a significant development regarding the unusual mathematics exam scores in Tuyen Quang, two more individuals have been arrested, raising the total number of suspects to 29. This information was disclosed by Colonel Nguyen Tuan Hung, Deputy Director of the Investigation Security Department (A09) of the Ministry of Public Security, during a press conference on August 5.

The identities of the two newly arrested individuals have not yet been revealed. All 29 suspects are under investigation for abusing their positions and powers while performing official duties. The investigation has faced numerous challenges due to the large number of individuals involved and the serious, organized nature of the case.

Colonel Hung noted that while 328 candidates had reached the age of 18 and possessed full legal capacity, their understanding of the law was still limited. He emphasized that the primary focus of the investigation is on the collective misconduct of the examination council, which serves as the basis for all candidates to retake the exam.

Prior to the case being transferred to the Ministry of Public Security, 27 individuals had already been arrested by the Tuyen Quang Provincial Police in July. The first person detained was Nguyen Ha Duy, a teacher at Tuyen Quang Specialized High School, who is accused of directly assisting and prompting students during the mathematics exam in pursuit of better results.

The investigation revealed that Tran Thi Thu Hang, the Vice Principal of Nguyen Van Huyen High School, who served as the head of the examination site at Tuyen Quang Specialized High School, directed and guided several supervisors to facilitate students in completing their mathematics exams. Consequently, Nguyen Ha Duy entered the examination room to assist students directly.

Among the remaining 25 suspects are Nguyen Thi Hang, the Principal of Tuyen Quang Specialized High School, and Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, a literature teacher at the same institution. The high school graduation exam took place on June 11-12, with over 1.2 million candidates participating. After the Ministry of Education announced the results, the mathematics scores of students from Tuyen Quang Specialized High School were found to be unusually high, with over 140 out of 154 perfect scores in the province originating from this school. A total of 299 out of 328 candidates scored 9 points or higher, the highest rate in the country.
