Can Tho is on the verge of initiating a monumental urban tourism project, the Mekong Urban Tourism Resort, which boasts a staggering investment of $6.2 billion. This development is poised to be the largest project in the city’s history, reflecting a significant step towards enhancing the region's infrastructure and tourism appeal.

On July 22, 2026, the Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee chaired a meeting with the Task Force overseeing the implementation of key projects in the area. The meeting focused on addressing challenges and accelerating the progress of several critical infrastructure projects, including the Mekong Urban Tourism Resort.

The project spans approximately 2,945 hectares and is designed to support a population of around 300,000 people. The Can Tho City People's Committee has already approved the detailed zoning plan at a scale of 1:2,000 and is currently preparing for compensation, support, and resettlement processes.

During the meeting, the Deputy Secretary emphasized the need for all units involved to expedite the subsequent phases of the Mekong Urban Tourism Resort project. Recently, on June 15, the Can Tho City Task Force 3175 issued a plan to promote investment in key projects using non-budgetary funding, with a strong focus on the Mekong Urban Tourism Resort.

Several crucial legal procedures for the project are expected to be initiated in 2026, including resolutions regarding land recovery for socio-economic development and investment approvals from the Prime Minister. The project will also involve competitive bidding to select investors and carry out land compensation and clearance.

The Mekong Urban Tourism Resort is envisioned as a modern urban area that will play a pivotal role in the southern growth of Can Tho. The development will feature a blend of recreational facilities, including amusement parks, water parks, multi-sport centers, a 36-hole golf course, and event venues. The urban structure is designed to adapt to climate change, with a focus on effective drainage solutions and sustainable development.

The land use structure will include low-rise housing, villas, and high-rise apartment buildings with a maximum height of 35 stories. This ambitious project aims to transform Can Tho into a vibrant urban tourism hub, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
