The Vietnamese government is intensifying its social housing program, aimed at offering affordable housing solutions for millions of workers and low-income families across the country. According to a report from the Government Portal, the program is set to significantly expand, with plans to initiate 114 social housing projects in Hanoi alone in 2026.
The goal is to complete at least one million social housing units by 2030, with localities already registering approximately 1.3 million units to meet the housing needs of around four million workers. This initiative is particularly focused on urban areas and industrial zones, where the demand for affordable housing is increasingly urgent.
As of the end of 2025, Vietnam has implemented around 720,000 social housing units, with approximately 180,000 already completed, including about 42,000 units designated for rental. In the first five months of 2026, local authorities registered around 158,000 social housing units, with over 91,000 currently under development.
The Ministry of Construction has indicated that localities will be encouraged to utilize the Housing Development Fund to invest in rental housing. This strategy is expected to help stabilize housing prices, making them more affordable for the general public. Having stable housing not only alleviates the pressure on workers regarding accommodation but also fosters a conducive environment for them to work peacefully and build long-term ties with their employers.
This initiative reflects Vietnam's commitment to addressing housing shortages and improving living conditions for its workforce, marking a significant step towards social equity and economic stability.
