Meta has recently faced criticism over its Muse Image feature, which enabled users to generate AI images by referencing public Instagram accounts. Launched on July 7, this feature allowed anyone to create images using the likeness of individuals simply by tagging their Instagram handle in a prompt. The backlash prompted Meta to announce the removal of this feature, stating that it 'missed the mark' in terms of user privacy.
The Muse Image model integrated with public Instagram accounts, meaning that users were not notified when their likeness was used for AI image generation. This raised serious concerns about privacy and security, as individuals could unknowingly have their images manipulated or used for impersonation and scams.
To protect themselves, users were advised to navigate to their Instagram settings and opt out of the content reuse feature. However, this action only prevented future image generation and did not remove any existing AI-generated images. The only comprehensive protection offered was switching accounts to private.
Privacy advocates pointed out that the ability to generate AI images from public profiles could lead to increased risks of identity theft and fraud. Cybercriminals have already been using generative AI tools to enhance phishing attacks, making the situation even more concerning.
In addition to the Muse Image controversy, Meta has faced scrutiny over other security issues related to its AI features. Earlier this year, a flaw in Meta's AI support chatbot was discovered, allowing it to make account changes without proper verification. Users were encouraged to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to bolster their account security.
As a response to the backlash, Meta's Oversight Board has called for stronger detection tools and better labeling of AI-generated content, highlighting the need for improved consumer protections in the digital space. The removal of Muse Image reflects a growing awareness of the importance of privacy in the age of AI.
