Heavy Rain in Son La Causes Over 3.6 Billion VND in Damage

Heavy rainfall from July 5 to July 6 in Son La province has led to damages estimated at approximately 3.65 billion VND. Although there were no reported casualties, the heavy rain caused landslides that affected eight houses. According to the Son La Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the rainfall was particularly intense in several areas, with Nậm Păm recording 99.4mm, Hua Trai at 86.6mm, and Thủy điện Nậm Chiến with 60.4mm.

The impact of the rain was felt across various sectors including housing, agriculture, transportation infrastructure, and aquaculture. Specifically, around 70.78 hectares of rice were washed away or covered, with 35 hectares in Mường La, 35 hectares in Ngọc Chiến, and 0.78 hectares in Chiềng Lao. Additionally, the rain resulted in the death or loss of 17 tons of fish, including species such as catfish and carp, in Ngọc Chiến, and one buffalo was also swept away.

Infrastructure was severely affected, with two irrigation dams and six canals being washed away, along with two sections of plastic pipes totaling approximately 200 meters. In terms of transportation, Ngọc Chiến experienced three landslide points along provincial road 109, with about 300 cubic meters of earth displaced, and five landslide points on the Nậm Nghiệp inter-village road, displacing around 260 cubic meters of earth. A culvert on provincial road 109 was blocked, and a bridge on the internal road in Kẻ was also obstructed, with about 50 meters of the approach road washed away. In Chiềng Lao, a rock weighing about 3 cubic meters fell onto national road 279D.

By noon on July 6, the Mường La Power Company had restored electricity to all 821 customers affected by the storm, which was caused by the remnants of storm number 1. The company continues to monitor weather developments, enhance site inspections, and manage the power grid to ensure safe and stable electricity supply.

Initial estimates indicate that the total damage from the heavy rain is around 3.65 billion VND, with Ngọc Chiến accounting for approximately 3.5 billion VND and Chiềng Lao around 150 million VND. Mường La is still conducting assessments to update the damage report. In response to the disaster, local authorities have set up emergency response teams to monitor weather conditions, implement response measures, mobilize resources to address landslides, ensure transportation safety, and assist residents in recovering agricultural and aquaculture production while assessing damages to propose support measures as per regulations.
