Doctor Arrested in Billion-Dollar Divorce Case in Ho Chi Minh City

Hồ Ngọc Tiên Trung, the CEO of Đại Nam Aesthetic Dental Clinic, has been arrested on charges of fraud and serious accounting violations. The arrest was announced on July 1 by the Ministry of Public Security, as part of an investigation into a divorce case involving a disputed asset worth around 1.2 trillion VND.

The investigation revealed that Trung exploited the establishment and operation of a dental clinic system, falsely advertising the qualifications of doctors and the origins of high-quality dental materials from the U.S., Germany, and Japan to build customer trust. After customers made payments, Trung directed his associates to use lower-quality dental materials from China instead of those promised, while providing incorrect warranty cards to conceal the fraud.

Additionally, Trung is accused of establishing multiple clinics under individual business licenses to create and use separate accounting records, failing to accurately report actual revenue for tax purposes. The Ministry of Public Security has identified customers who used services at Đại Nam clinics as victims in this case, which is still under investigation.

Trung has recently gained attention as the plaintiff in a contentious divorce case that has dragged on for a decade with his wife, Ngọc Anh. Court documents from a hearing in May indicate that Trung initially agreed to marry Ngọc Anh, believing she was pregnant with his child, only to later discover that the child was not his. He claims that the marriage registration documents contained numerous errors, including missing identification and signatures. Trung is contesting the division of shared assets, arguing that their marriage was not legal, but he has offered to give his wife 20% of the asset value to settle the matter.

Ngọc Anh has opposed the annulment, asserting that their marriage was entirely voluntary. She explained that they met and fell in love during college, but faced family opposition. During their separation, she became pregnant with another man. When Trung learned she was six months pregnant but had not married the child's father, he sought permission from his family to marry her, promising to care for both mother and child. The couple lived together for over 20 years, building a reported fortune of over 1.2 trillion VND, which includes multiple properties, bank deposits, and a dental chain with 38 clinics.

The court has temporarily suspended the hearing to verify additional documents and evidence and to address complaints from both parties.
