HCMC – The current power capacity of wind farms has exceeded the safety level due to the northeast monsoon, leading to their stoppage, according to the National Load Dispatch Center.

This year’s northeast monsoon packed with gusts has struck Vietnam late, directly impacting the wind farms in the North Central, Southern Central, Central Highlands and Southwestern regions.

The power capacity remains 1,500-2,500MW with average output of 50 million kWh per day, up 140% year-on-year.

Recently, the National Load Dispatch Center repeatedly registered a record high power capacity of 3,077-3,386MW, or 85% of the installed capacity, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Given the negative impacts of the northeast monsoon, wind farms must halt turbine operations to ensure safety. The capacity reduction is expected to adversely impact the country’s electricity supply.

On December 17, several wind farms in the north-central province of Quang Tri were forced to shut down.
