Higher domestic airfare caps likely

HCMC – The Ministry of Transport is currently gathering feedback on a draft circular in which domestic airfare caps would rise by VND50,000 to VND250,000 per ticket depending on routes.

According to the draft circular, the proposed airfare caps for domestic routes between 500 kilometers and below 850 kilometers would be set at VND2,250,000 for a one-way ticket, which is VND50,000 higher than the current ceiling.

For routes between 850 kilometers and below 1,000 kilometers, the airfare caps would rise from VND2,790,000 to VND2,890,000 per one-way ticket.

Routes between 1,000 kilometers and below 1,280 kilometers would see a revision of the ceiling price, with an increase of VND200,000, from VND3,200,000 to VND3,400,000 per one-way ticket.

The Ministry of Transport has proposed a VND250,000 increase in airfare caps for routes with a distance of 1,280 kilometers and longer, from VND3,750,000 to VND4,000,000 per one-way ticket.

For routes with a distance below 500 kilometers, the airfare caps would remain unchanged as stated in Circular 17, ranging from VND1,600,000 to VND1,700,000 per one-way ticket.

Meanwhile, some Vietnamese carriers have proposed eliminating airfare caps.

The National Assembly Finance and Budget Committee earlier emphasized the need to maintain the domestic airfare caps. They argued that removing it would take away the Government’s ability to manage aviation services and make life difficult for low-income individuals to use air travel services.
