On August 31, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had conducted a coordinated attack on US military bases in Jordan as retaliation for a US strike on the Iranian island of Larak. The IRGC claimed that the operation involved the use of missiles and drones, successfully hitting the King Hussein and Al Azraq bases, which are crucial for US military operations in the region.

According to Iranian media, the strikes were aimed at destroying technical infrastructure and maintenance facilities, as well as the deployment sites of US fighter jets. The IRGC stated that the attacks were a direct response to the US's attempts to undermine Iran's control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, warning that any future assaults would be met with even harsher retaliation.

Press TV reported that the IRGC released a video purportedly showing the missile launches targeting US military positions. Open-source intelligence accounts indicated that Iranian forces also targeted the Muwaffaq airbase, a significant US stronghold in the Middle East. Social media footage suggested that US Patriot missile defense systems intercepted several Iranian missiles over Jordan.

Fox News cited an anonymous US source stating that most of the Iranian missiles aimed at US forces in Jordan had been intercepted, with no significant damages reported so far. The Jordanian military confirmed that it had intercepted eight missiles entering its airspace during the Iranian attack.

The Iranian strikes followed a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins, who indicated that US forces had targeted two Iranian rocket launchers located on Larak Island. Hawkins claimed that IRGC forces were preparing to launch rockets equipped with mines towards the Strait of Hormuz, although he did not provide evidence to support this assertion.

The IRGC confirmed the US had indeed conducted attacks on Larak Island, resulting in casualties among both military personnel and civilians. Ebrahim Azizi, the Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, warned of severe retaliation against the US strikes. This marked the first military action by the US against Iranian territory since late July.

Larak Island is strategically located near the narrowest point of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil transport. The recent attacks occurred less than a week after the US military announced it had completed mine-clearing operations in international shipping lanes through the Strait. Washington continues to enforce a naval blockade on vessels entering Iranian ports, having resumed military strikes against Iran after a period of relative calm.
