Saudi Forces Promise Strong Response After Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport

Saudi Arabia and its allied forces in Yemen have vowed a "firm response" to recent Houthi attacks targeting civilians, particularly following an incident at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport that left three Saudi nationals dead. The attacks, which occurred on October 8, involved multiple rocket strikes against the airport, prompting significant disruptions in air travel.

Major General Turki al-Maliki, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that the coalition has already launched retaliatory strikes, destroying three rocket launch platforms used by the Houthis. He emphasized that attacks on civilians would not go unanswered, indicating an escalation in military operations against the Houthi forces.

The Houthi rebels, who have been engaged in conflict with the Saudi-led coalition since 2015, targeted the airport twice on Thursday. The first strike aimed at airport facilities, while the second targeted a Saudia airline aircraft. This aggressive action has raised concerns about the security of air travel in the region, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Major airlines, including Air India and the Lufthansa Group, have suspended operations to Riyadh in response to the heightened risks.

In light of these developments, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued recommendations advising airlines to avoid certain areas of Saudi airspace, citing the Houthis' demonstrated capability to strike deeper into Saudi territory. The attacks have not only threatened civilian safety but also raised alarms regarding the potential targeting of critical infrastructure, including oil facilities.

The conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis has intensified in recent weeks, with the Houthis gaining ground along Yemen's coast and capturing strategic territories, including areas around the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Despite the coalition's counteroffensive efforts, which have recaptured several key locations, the fighting shows no signs of abating.

As the situation evolves, the international community is closely monitoring the developments in Yemen, where the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen amid ongoing hostilities.
