The Birth of Argentina's First Mass-Produced Motorcycle

In the early decades of the 20th century, a remarkable story unfolded in Palmira, Mendoza, where the Ramonot motorcycle was born. This motorcycle, equipped with a 100 cc engine and a unique pulley drive, is recognized as Argentina's first mass-produced motorcycle. The Ramonot was not just a vehicle; it symbolized industrial ingenuity and innovation in a time when the motorcycle industry in Argentina was still in its infancy.

The Ramonot was developed by brothers Alberto and Enrique Ramonot, who began their journey by adapting small engines to bicycles. Their goal was practical: to facilitate transportation in a region where rural work and productive activities were prevalent. As their project evolved, they founded the Sociedad Industrial de Motocicletas Argentinas (SIMA) and established workshops in Palmira to manufacture their motorcycle.

The Ramonot quickly gained attention for its distinctive features, including a two-stroke engine and a lack of traditional gearbox and clutch. Instead, it utilized a leather belt or pulley for transmission. One of its most intriguing characteristics was its starting method: riders had to run alongside the bike and leap onto the seat to get it going. Despite its simplicity, some models could reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.

Production of the Ramonot reached its peak around 1937, with estimates suggesting that between hundreds and 3,000 units were produced over the years. The factory employed nearly 100 workers at its height, and the motorcycles found their way into various sectors, including delivery services for local newspapers and companies.

As the years passed, the Ramonot transitioned from a practical transportation solution to a piece of industrial history, leaving a lasting impact on Argentina's motorcycle landscape. Production ceased in 1946, and while many of the surviving units have become collector's items, the legacy of the Ramonot remains a testament to the early days of motorcycle manufacturing in Argentina.
