New Low Pressure Area Forms Offshore Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has reported the formation of a new low pressure area (LPA) off the coast of the Philippines. As of October 9, 2026, at 2 AM local time, the LPA is located at coordinates 13.5° N latitude and 144.2° E longitude, approximately 2,220 kilometers east-southeast of Luzon Island.

While there is a possibility that this low pressure area could strengthen into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, PAGASA has assessed this likelihood as low. The LPA is currently outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), but its development is being closely monitored.

In addition to the LPA, the Philippines is experiencing weather influences from a low-pressure trough, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and northeast monsoon winds. These weather patterns are expected to bring scattered rain and thunderstorms to various regions, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides, particularly in areas experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall.

The low-pressure trough is causing rain in the Bicol region, Eastern Visayas, and provinces such as Quezon, Marinduque, and Romblon. Meanwhile, the ITCZ is affecting Mindanao, the remainder of Visayas, and Palawan. The northeast monsoon is expected to bring rain to the Cagayan Valley and some parts of northern and central Luzon.

PAGASA advises residents to remain vigilant and monitor updates regarding the LPA, especially in areas prone to rain and the associated risks of flooding and landslides due to heavy rainfall.
