On September 30, passengers on flydubai flight FDB1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv displayed remarkable bravery when they intervened to prevent a potentially catastrophic situation involving the co-pilot. The flight, which had approximately 180 passengers onboard, experienced a dramatic turn of events about two hours after takeoff.
According to Tzvika Manes, a passenger and director at Barak Capital Underwriting, the chaos began when his wife heard shouting from the cockpit while their daughter was in the restroom. She alerted a nearby crew member, prompting three men, including Manes, to rush into the cockpit. "I was covered in blood. The scene was absolutely insane," Manes recounted, visibly shaken by the experience.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the co-pilot had attacked the captain with a knife, attempting to take control of the aircraft and crash it. "This was an extremely serious security incident," Netanyahu stated. Passengers and crew members worked together to subdue the co-pilot as he tried to sabotage the aircraft's controls.
Another passenger, Daniel, described the tense atmosphere before the incident, noting that a sudden commotion erupted in the cockpit. "I saw someone trying to push another person out. Just then, three Israeli men seated behind me rushed to see what was happening, and the plane suddenly nosedived sharply," Daniel recalled. He indicated that the co-pilot had stabbed the captain and was attempting to seize control of the plane.
The aircraft reportedly plunged from an altitude of 10,000 meters to 5,000 meters in less than a minute, accelerating from 760 km/h to 1,100 km/h. After a few minutes of chaos, two off-duty pilots seated at the back of the plane managed to enter the cockpit and regain control.
The captain sustained serious injuries and was treated by a doctor onboard. The co-pilot was restrained and appeared unconscious. Daniel expressed his fear during the ordeal, likening it to a potential repeat of the September 11 attacks. "It felt like everything was over. I thought we were going to crash," he said.
After the incident, the flight was diverted to Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia, where the co-pilot was detained and is currently under investigation by local authorities. Netanyahu stated that the motives behind the co-pilot's actions remain unclear. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding flight safety and security protocols.
As the situation unfolded, passengers were left in a state of uncertainty, with communication from the cockpit severed. However, when the pilots finally announced that they were preparing to land, a sense of calm returned to the cabin.
This harrowing experience highlights the importance of passenger vigilance and cooperation in ensuring safety during air travel. The quick actions of those aboard the flight undoubtedly averted a disaster.
