A Vietnam Airlines flight from Munich Airport (MUC) to Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) (HAN) experienced a tail strike incident on Saturday, August 15. The Boeing 787-9, operating as flight VN34, took off late and struck the runway with its tail, resulting in significant damage to the aircraft.

Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft overran the runway, damaging runway lights as it attempted to take off. The flight crew, prioritizing safety, decided to return to Munich after the incident. Approximately 90 minutes after departure, the aircraft performed a low approach before landing safely, although the left main gear was trailing smoke.

According to Aviation Herald, the aircraft involved was VN-A867, which had just departed from Bavaria on Runway 26L. As the plane rotated late, a large cloud of dust and dirt was kicked up, indicating that it had overrun the end of the runway. After climbing to around FL100, the crew discovered a tire pressure issue, prompting the decision to return to Munich.

Upon returning, the aircraft circled Munich before attempting to land. The landing disabled the runway, which was subsequently closed for inspection. An aviation insider reported that the tail strike caused severe damage to the tail strike module and left noticeable scrape marks on the aircraft's aft section. It is anticipated that the aircraft may be out of service for several months due to the damage.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew aboard the flight were unharmed. Vietnam Airlines issued a statement confirming the incident and reassured that all safety procedures were followed. Passengers were disembarked safely upon return to Munich, and the airline is working to accommodate them for onward travel.

The airline is coordinating with relevant authorities to inspect the aircraft and will provide updates following the inspection. Vietnam Airlines has expressed its sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remains its top priority.
