EVN Clarifies Rooftop Solar Installation and Selling Excess Power
The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has provided detailed information regarding the installation of rooftop

On September 29, 2026, the Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) announced that solar rooftop installations are providing households and businesses with a new option for generating their own electricity, leading to substantial cost savings. The ability to produce and consume electricity on-site allows users to reduce their reliance on the grid, potentially lowering monthly electricity expenses by 30-70%, depending on the system's size and usage.
This benefit is particularly pronounced for households and businesses that consume large amounts of electricity during the day. By generating power right where it is used, these users can significantly decrease their electricity purchases from the grid. For businesses, especially those with daytime operations, solar energy can directly power their equipment, while households can meet a considerable portion of their electricity needs with a well-designed system.
The effectiveness of solar rooftop systems is enhanced when installed on suitable roofs—those that are spacious, unobstructed by shade, and structurally sound. In Hanoi, roofs facing south, southeast, or southwest are ideal for maximizing solar exposure, with an average of 6-8 square meters of roof space required for every kilowatt-peak (kWp) of solar capacity.
For instance, the Ngân Long Technical Science Company in Quảng Ninh, which employs over 2,000 workers and consumes a significant amount of electricity, has reported substantial savings since installing a solar rooftop system. Previously, the company spent between 40-60 billion VND on electricity each month. With the new system operational, about 8-10% of the factory's electricity needs are now met through solar power, resulting in average monthly savings of 5-6 billion VND, and up to 7 billion VND during sunny months.
Phạm Xuân Giỏi, the company's electrical manager, shared that they invested approximately 150 billion VND in the solar rooftop system, marking one of their largest investments in energy in recent years. Beyond cost savings, he emphasized that the shift towards solar energy reflects a broader change in mindset among manufacturers. Foreign partners are increasingly evaluating energy sources and efficiency as part of their assessments.
According to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), in the first half of 2026, they added around 8,500 solar rooftop customers with a total capacity of nearly 395 MW, surpassing their goals. By the end of June 2026, EVNNPC had over 10,000 customers with a total capacity exceeding 718 MW, with Hải Phòng leading in solar rooftop development in northern Vietnam.
Despite rapid growth, solar rooftops cannot completely replace grid electricity. Their output is weather-dependent and primarily meets daytime energy needs, meaning the national grid remains essential during nighttime or cloudy days. Therefore, expanding solar rooftop installations must be accompanied by simplified procedures for construction and safety regulations to ensure smooth operation.
