The recent unearthing of 17 soldiers' remains from a mass grave at the Tan Binh Martyrs' Cemetery in Da Nang has ignited a wave of hope among families searching for their lost loved ones. The remains, believed to belong to soldiers from the 2nd Division of Military Region 5, were recovered from the site where they had perished during a fierce battle in 1970.

The memorial service held by the local government in Hiep Duc, Da Nang, was attended by numerous family members of the deceased soldiers. Among them was Bui Thi Son, a 65-year-old woman from Dong Nai, who came with the hope that one of the remains could be her father, Bui Van Sau, who was killed at the age of 29 during the war. Son was only seven when her father left for the battlefield, and she had only seen him once during his brief return home.

"I still hope that my father will return to the family. Even though I do not know if one of these remains is him, I am deeply moved to see his comrades being brought back to rest," Son shared, her voice filled with emotion.

Another attendee, Bui Van Ngoan, 58, from Hai Phong, also came with a heavy heart. He was just a few months old when his father enlisted in 1968, and he has never met him. The only memories he has are those shared by his mother. When he learned that the remains belonged to soldiers from the same division as his father, he felt compelled to pay his respects.

"I have no childhood memories to recognize my father, only fragments of information that my family has preserved over the years. Yet, standing here before these remains, I still hope that one of them is my father," Ngoan expressed, lighting incense for the fallen soldiers.

General Tran Minh Trong, Deputy Political Commissar of Military Region 5, and other officials were present to honor the soldiers. The remains were exhumed on September 15, following a thorough investigation that included testimonies from witnesses confirming their identities as soldiers who fell in the battles of Hiep Duc in 1970.

During the excavation, various personal items were found alongside the remains, including parachute cords, a hammock, and a leather wallet, which corroborated the accounts of those involved in the recovery process.

Trần Phước Sảo, a former battalion commander, recalled the intense battles that took place in the area. He noted that many soldiers had to be buried in mass graves due to the circumstances of war. "The memories of my comrades who fell in battle have never faded. I hope we can find all of them and bring them back to their families and comrades," he said.

This poignant event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the enduring hope of families seeking closure and connection with their lost loved ones.
